Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4 in 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an sole daughter of her grandmother. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she entered Temple University. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. She hoped to become an instructor of English in a secondary school. Her dream to become an English teacher at high school was shattered when she dropped out of school. A poet by trade, she began performing in live poetry recitals. She later teamed together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. The singer performed at the Roots concert. She then secured collaborations, which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
